TheChibyVerse Spotlight: Donna Onwukaike

Corporate lawyer and ESQ Rising Star Donna Onwukaike on why happiness is a perfectly valid use of your time - no job title required.

"Being a hot babe is my career. I just moonlight as a corporate lawyer."

By day, Donna handles corporate deals, solves problems and keeps business matters from becoming bigger problems. By night, she might be somewhere looking good, dancing and minding her business. Her job title? Corporate lawyer. Her first identity? She'd like you to get that right.

"The hot babe came first. The law just pays some of the bills."

And just like that, we know this is not going to be your typical lawyer interview.

So, how did the law happen?

"My parents chose my career for me. I actually wanted to be an accountant, but I was terrible at maths. Still am, by the way, so imagine the disaster that would have been."

Thankfully, she grew into law, discovered that she genuinely enjoyed it, and found her footing in a profession built on precision, problem-solving and discretion. In November 2025, she received the ESQ Nigerian Legal Awards Rising Star Award, recognition for work that often happens behind the scenes.

Not bad for someone who didn't exactly choose the career herself. We thank God for parental foresight.

Donna Meets The Chibyverse

Her first encounter with Chibyverse was in 2022, at the old South location on Younis Bashorun Street. Remember that tight, stuffy, two-storey building? The nostalgic South Long Island?

"One of those was enough to last me through the night."

Yet something about the place stuck. It had character, energy and a kind of freedom that made it feel like more than just another night out. Years later, she's still part of the story.

What does Chibyverse give her that the corporate world doesn't?

An opportunity to use her energy for something other than deadlines, negotiations and somebody else's business problems. Here, she can dance, laugh and exist without having to be the most responsible person in the room.

What happens when the corporate lawyer clocks out?

"Honestly, I've probably been in a courtroom thrice in my entire legal career, so let's not give me a courtroom persona I haven't earned."

Most of her work is transactional, but the professional side is serious, deliberate and detail-oriented. Outside work, however, the brief changes.

"The face pretty, body tea, the outfit tea, the music is playing, and nobody should be asking me to review anything."

And if her law firm colleagues caught her on a proper Chibyverse night?

"The dancing. No contest."

Apparently, the South video snippets already provide sufficient evidence.

Three Words, Zero Billable Hours

Unfiltered. Nostalgic. Unhinged.

Unfiltered because people can simply be themselves. Nostalgic because her Chibyverse story stretches back to 2022. Unhinged because people come to have fun, and things can get a little out of hand.

Does the lawyer in her ever switch off and stop reading people?

"Let's not pretend I can switch off being a lawyer just because the DJ is playing good music."

She still notices things. Occupational hazard. But she's not there to analyse everybody or turn a night out into a case study.

"Sometimes the most freeing thing you can do is stop trying to figure everything out and enjoy the moment. Not every situation requires an analysis of any sort."

Honestly, that might be advice for the entire city.

The Art of Doing Absolutely Nothing Productive

For Donna, one of Chibyverse's biggest lessons is that rest doesn't always have to look productive.

Professionals are constantly measuring achievements, deadlines, earnings and the next big thing. Even relaxation can become another activity to optimise.

But sometimes, you need to put the phone down, leave the emails unanswered and remember that you're a human being, not a productivity tool.

"Happiness is a perfectly valid use of your time. You don't have to earn the right to enjoy yourself by exhausting yourself first."

She just doesn't need every room to know

And while she values her privacy, Lagos has a way of making sure professional and social circles occasionally collide. She doesn't mind people knowing what she does; she just doesn't need every room to know.

"Sometimes Donna is just Donna. No job title required."

More Than a Party

Does Chibyverse really deliver on its promise of being a community before a party?

Donna thinks so. A party can be somewhere you visit once and forget. A community becomes part of your story, filled with familiar faces, shared memories and experiences that keep drawing you back.

Then the rain eased

One memory captures that perfectly: a night when heavy rain threatened to end the party almost as soon as it began. People scrambled for cover, some left, and the DJ had to stop because water and equipment don't mix.

Then the rain eased.

The music returned, and Donna and her friend headed straight to the front of the DJ booth with a few others. Slowly, people emerged from the cabanas and joined them. Before long, the dance floor was alive again.

"Sometimes, the nights you remember most aren't the perfect ones. They're the ones where everything goes wrong, but people still find their way back to the dance floor."

Looking ahead

Looking ahead, she'd love to see Chibyverse grow while protecting that sense of familiarity and belonging, creating even more experiences that bring people together beyond the parties themselves.

One Last Thing, Donna…

The Chibyverse is…

"Where you can leave titles at the door, unwind, and have the time of your life."

And her message to the community?

Keep showing up, making memories, looking good and, most importantly, dancing.

"And to those who know me primarily as a hot babe, I hope this interview has revealed that there's a little more to me than good dance moves."

Work hard. Look good. Have fun. Never underestimate the importance of a good night out.

There's a time for everything. Make sure you're making time for the fun stuff, too.

See you at the next one.
